Like any other genre, there's good and bad in Direct to Vids. Not sure if I have a fave but a big deal was made back in the day about Ray Liotta's excellent PHOENIX.
Boomer, here, born 1960. A great many thousands of hours have been spent in video/record (!) stores, and I loved it! Just reading this Substack, titles like RobotJox, CyberNinja, and actors like Mark Dacascos, Olivier Gruner, Jeff Speakman, Cynthia Rothrock, Gary Daniels, Don 'The Dragon' Wilson, Frank Zagarino, etc. are flashing at me from my mind's "99 cent Rental" shelf! Oddly, the robot/cop combo made me think about THX1138. Never mind the ability to watch all the 'Planet of the Apes' movies, in order. One of my favorite memories was showing the store clerk how the key art for Melissa Etheridge and Howard Jones album covers were interchangeable, and getting a blank look of hostility for my cleverness. Overhearing a mother with two 8 year-old boys going through the VHS shelves and calling out the movies they wanted to watch, "Tank Head" (a dude has a turret for a head!) "Ssssss!" (a dude drinks potion that turns him poisonous reptile!) "Death Dimension" (martial artist Jim Kelly gets a '70s paycheck!). Well, that mother said "no!" every time, trying to steer them to "3 Ninjas!" I caught her quietly, and told her that I had seen every one of those movies and that they were totally inappropriate (some might say 'uncalled for !') and she was right to say 'no!' She laughed, and she was still laughing as I made my rentals and exited the Wherehouse, Music Plus, Sam Goody, Blockbuster, Korean-owned independent. Good times!
